That was an absolutely amazing weekend! Thanks to all the basses (especially Dale) who just oozed sexiness.
I consider it an absolute honour to spend the weekend with such an awesome bunch of guys and the future is looking pretty damned bright!
I'd like to get some discussion going by everyone posting 1 thing (hopefully 1 of many) that they're going to take away from the weekend.
I'll start the ball rolling with mine: Singing with space and resonance, no forced edge on the sound, projecting the sound through the top of the head. The chorus sounds awesome when we get that right!
What's yours?

Hello guys.....I just want
Hello guys.....I just want to reiterate what Duncan put so nicely. This week has been the SEX, and I have to say, I've discovered so much about so many things. Before I start jabbering on I'd like to say a big thank you to Timm, Rob and Dunc for been the best role models we could ask for. Its really difficult to explain how lucky we are to have the help and support from them and I for one cannot put it in to words!
Moving swiftly on...again touching on what Dunc said, i feel its an honour for myself to sing with the best group of people and I am definitely looking forward to the future!
I don't know if any of you know about the one on one session I had with Zac, this has to be the highlight of my weekend because it just taught me what the crack is when it comes to singing lead to the standard of what Zac is. I recommend this to everyone, because I think if you can fix your problems before you touch on the songs on the risers, you can make it better for everyone else by doing exactly what people like Joe and Duncan and Zac and Al and everyone already do so well. Thats what works for me anyway....
The thing I've learned this weekend has to be raising the pallet, fixing my vowels and enjoying the entire week as a result of it. this therefore all molds into bringing up the sound through the top of your head, and making it sound sexy or brighter in most cases, generally in tune too.
Thats all folks..........in harmony Carl x
thanks carl :) it was such a
thanks carl :) it was such a great weekend, and one of the most memorable for a while. the thing I will remember most was the audience reaction we get when we do it right. on the show and in the afterglow on the saturday, we put together what we had been taught and we did it well, and for me this is the best motivation you can get for doing what we know we can do, all of the time.
i will also take away the fact that i sing in the most superior section of the chorus :P
al x
I really like what you're
I really like what you're saying Carl, and I hope that most, if not all the people on the risers this weekend feel exactly the same way.
I love the standard of barbershop that our chorus can produce when we put our minds to it - if you haven't taken the chance to step off the risers to listen to the chorus out front yet, then I would really recommend it to hear just how good we actually are. It can sometimes feel a bit strenuous if you work so hard but have no way to sample the fruits of your labour...
That's why I'd like to second what Al said about the reaction we get from an audience every time we sing - we do it well, and they love it (especially the basses...) and so we must keep it up and only aim to better our standard of singing over the next year.
I want to extend a personal thank you to Rob, Timm, Dunc (and latterly, Andy :D ) for working so hard, and with such passion and dedication. We truely wouldn't be where we are today without them.
Similarly, I have enormous praise for Mike Lofthouse, Bill Harvey, Alan Goldsmith and Phil Mobsby and all the other people who work so hard (and I mean really bloody hard) to get everything we do running so smoothly - I really do think some kind of cake is in order :D
Personally, this has been my first (of many) harmony college(s) and it has been one of the best barbershop weekends I've ever had. I'm going to take away so many happy memories and new skills, and I only hope I can retain them as long as possible - my memory's pants.
Special congratulations are in order for Ian and Dave, our two newest members, it looked like they enjoyed every bit of the weekend just as much as everybody else, always getting involved and having fun.
So let's get ready for our next rehearsal on September 30th, in Birmingham.
Can't wait to show those girls at the Ivy League just how far we've raised the bar :D
Thanks for a great weekend to everyone who made my first harmony college so great!
Death to Tenors! Pitch-pipes at dawn!
I apologise, last night I
I apologise, last night I was very tired and just wanted to get something up here because I was on such a high, I completely forgot to thank some key people.
Luckily Joe and Carl are on the ball!
We as a chorus owe a great deal to Rob, Timm, Dunc and Andy. They have been there from the start with such energy and entheusiasm, not to mention great knowledge and experience. I think we can all agree that without them the chorus wouldn't be the vibrant group it is today.
On the organisational front (and as Joe points out, there is a HUGE amount of work that goes into this) we have to extend a massive thanks to people like Bill Harvey, Mike Lofthouse, Alan Goldsmith, Phil Mobsby and for this weekend Ken Hume and his tireless team. Anybody any good at baking cakes? I make a mean lemon ice-cream but it's difficult to transport.
Also a big thanks to Ian and Dave who really got into the spirit of things this weekend and already feel like they've been members for ages! Maybe we need to get Dave working with Alan Goldsmith as PRO, in the bar he possibly recruited one of the bar staff and also as the female security guard chucked us out he turned to her and said "Do you like the close harmony?".
Basically thanks to everyone that makes this possible, and thank you in advance for all their hard work in the future!
p.s I'm still on a high!
It sounds like you've all
May I add to the sentiments
May I add to the sentiments above. I had an amazing weekend, it was hard work, but more than worth it! We really pulled out the goods, and everyone can be proud, in particular the newer members.
For my "things to take away", the emphasis on singing with a raised pallete/greater space was hammered home brilliantly: leaving me suddenly realising I was actually applying craft during afterglow tags! Not only that, but the enthusiasm and dedication from all sides over the weekend has inspired me to bring as many new people as I can into the chorus. Think of all the people missing out!
A huge thanks to everyone who has put in so much work, both out front and behind the scenes. Wouldn't want to miss anyone out, so I'd just like to say, for everyone who has given their time and experience to the chorus, thank you so much, I would like to have your babies.
Let's keep it up!
Reading all your comments it
Reading all your comments it is obvious to me that the few days you had together was magic.
My magic moment was in the bar after the show when all your inhibitions had gone and I was lucky enough to witness such a spontaneous and incredible performance (even if was put on for the girls you smart Alec’s) It was absolutely incredible and I love Ben.
As an old feller can I just say.
Every one of you can help bring about a cultural change in our society by doing your bit to harness the sleeping talent and energy in young people that is so often misdirected.
You have already upstaged us oldies and the next time you run around chanting we will funnel you right in to the river you young sods.
Here’s a challenge for you.Treble the number of NBYC guys at Harmony College next year
Bill
This certainly ahs been the
This certainly ahs been the best barbershop weekend i've ever had. When i got home, i told everyone how knackered i was and how little sleep i got but it was certainly worth it for so many reasons.
I formed new and strengthened existing friendships
My personal sining improvemnt/takeaway thing has to be forward projection of the sound, whilst maintaining a resonant bass quality
I'd like to thank a lot of people for many memorable quotes and moments, my personal highlight of the weekend has to the saturday afterglow and in paritcular singing south rampart in quartet with zac, steve and dan. I absolutely loved it, it wasn't until then i realsied i new south rampart well enough to sing it in quartet!
I'm glad that it seems none of us forget how lucky we are to be able to work with and learn from some of the best educators in britain and the world, people want to teach us and be part of the progress of the national barbershop youth chorus which i think is pretty awesome
Nothing can beat the electric feeling we got on saturday after the show, we certainly just blew the audience away which was obvious from the amount of compliments recived after.
Thanx again guys, see you all soon
I will try to keep this
I will try to keep this short, but this may be impossible.
My life has changed... i now feel the chords running through the blood and my poor children have now been blessed with growing up in a barbershop family (can't wait to embarrass them in front of their friends when they come round for tea!) the lucky wee blighters!
I, like the rest of you i'm sure, am still totally buzzing from the experience, and am still hearing chords come out of nowhere, like the distant hum from the cars passing outside, or the telly in the next room.
Thank you so much everyone for making me feel so welcome, like a brother right from the start. i feel so lucky to have found you all, an amazing group of young men with such passion. Rob,
(this is a picture of you) it was a joy to watch you work, you are obviously such an inspiration to us all. Timm and Dunc, you taught me so much about my voice i feel like a completely new singer. I've learnt so much, it's going to be hard to put my finger on one thing that stood out for me.
the performance is certainly up there. strait after i had to phone my wife but she could barely understand a word i was saying cos (don't tell anyone, they might think i'm not manly, but) i was blubbing so much with the emotion. But i think that the best thing was just really feeling part of the fold and getting to know so many lovely blokes. to those of you who i didn't quite manage to chat with much, i look forward to doing so in the future. you have been warned.
thank you all so much, it's been emotional. much love and respect, dave x
Hey guys... hope everyone's
Hey guys... hope everyone's survived the landing back down to Earth after an absolutely cracking weekend! The memory bank is well and truely full of some great memories... i'm even questioning if some are true or just down to sleep deprivation (e.g. army chanting around campus - a belting memory).
A favourite memory from the weekend has to be that of such a warm welcome into a great bunch of guys. After the weekend, i'm amazed at how people I could swear I've known for years. My learning curve over the weekend has been huge... one aspect being the importance of team spirit in a chorus, an element that the Youth Chorus does second to none. Our team spirit off stage was also commented on as being more than present on stage, in our sound, presentation and generally our shared ambition to be the best! This atmosphere has been built through our appreciation of the best educating and leadership team around.
Thanks guys for allowing me to be a proud member of a proud team.
High five and good times
Dale.
I love this chorus It's so
I love this chorus
